Bury Bombers travelled to Gloucestershire in the last weekend of January to play the Bristol Pirates and the Cardiff Celts in a round-robin competition. We spent the night in a local Travelodge and made good time to the venue the following morning only to discover Bristol Pirates had changed their home venue and hadn’t bothered informing us! Eventually we found out where we were supposed to be and arrived there nearly an hour late!
Bury Bombers 25 vs. Bristol Pirates 22
Although the referee wanted to start this game as soon as possible, the coaches (Jill & Hugh) persuaded him to give the players a 15 minute warm up.
The Bombers played with style but it was a struggle and at the end of the first quarter we were losing. We had a team talk; made some subs and the team went back out onto court with a bang! We used our secret weapon - the full court press! This tactical move by the coaches worked wonders and we slowly but surely caught Pirates up and gained the lead for the first time. With a lot of pressure on the Pirates and only 4 minutes to go in the second quarter they were on team fouls, giving the Bombers some cheap points!
Half time arrived and Bombers were leading. The coaches kept the full court press on and the third quarter went by extremely quickly (with Bombers winning it 11-6). The final quarter seemed to take forever, especially as Pirates were starting to fight back, but Bombers held firm and finished off worthy winners, 25-22.
