Club Diary
In September 1999, the Club had a change of name. The members chose the Bury Bombers, and a donation from King Edward VI School’s Year 11 allowed new kit to be purchased. Also in this month, the Club went back to the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball National Junior Championships, this time with a new coach, Jill Anderson, who had recently passed her Level 2 Coaching Qualification.
This time, an 8ft Championship was included along with the 10ft one, and the Club decided, because of the age of its players, to go into the 8ft competition. In their new kit, the team played fantastically, only losing to one team all weekend. They finished a brilliant second, with Hugh Anderson being awarded the Most Promising Junior Player of the Championships. Hugh was also joint runner up in the Bury Free Press Sports awards along with with Brian Alldis, receiving the Courage in Sport Award. The Club began their season in the Development League and by the end of the 1999/2000 season gained valuable experience of match play.
In October 1999, the Club again played the Round Table. This time, the Round Table, having had one match experience, were more confident. However, the Bury Bombers beat them 22 – 0, netting £550
In September 2000, the Bury Bombers were invited to the Bury Free Press Sports Awards, and were represented by Hugh Anderson and Brian Alldis. The Club won the Courage in Sport Award. The Club again entered a team into the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball National Junior Championships for the third time. This year, the team destroyed the opposition, winning most of their games, and beating the Lord Mayor Treloar College 12 – 2 in the final.
September 2000 also marked the arrival of the new season for the Bury Bombers in the Development League, and after a fantastic season they won many games, and won the Eastern Region Division.
