EAST TEAM – WINNERS OF NATIONAL COMPETITION
At the end of October 2009, two teams from East Anglia represented the East of England at the Lords’ Taverners National Wheelchair Basketball Competition at Stoke Mandeville.
The U19 team consisted mostly of members of the Bury Bombers team based in Bury St Edmunds. They had a novice team at this age group and consequently the tournament was always going to be a learning experience. Nevertheless there were some outstanding performances from JAMES NEWTON, who scored two 3-point baskets in the group stage victory over Scotland, one to take a 1 point lead with only 30 seconds remaining on the clock!
In the knock out stage, a victory over the South East left the team facing Scotland in a re-match. This time the Scots came away victorious. Sixth place (out of nine) seemed a satisfactory placing for this young team.
The U15 team combined experience with youth and blended players from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Led by Captain JACK PERRY they cruised past Yorkshire and the South-East before a solo effort from the captain saw them take the top spot in the group stages with a victory over East Midlands.
In the quarter final they faced West Midlands, and again came away comfortable victors. The semi final against the North West was a harder proposition, but smooth passing and confident defence saw them through to the final against Northern Ireland.
The final pitched an experienced Northern Irish point player (ball handler) against our stalwart team. To ferocious support from both sets of supporters, which raised the roof of the stadium, the teams went neck and neck. Confident baskets from SAM PENNELL in the last half put the East clear by 3 points and they ran out deserved gold medallists. The East U15 team are therefore national wheelchair basketball champions!
