Bury Bombers take second place in Lords Taverners National Junior League.
The Bury Bombers Wheelchair Basketball Club’s Junior team (U19s) took second place at this weekend’s National Finals in Nottingham after a hard-fought knock-out stage, beating the Leeds Spiders and the Sheffield Steelers. However, the Vikings, a composite team from Merseyside, Newcastle and Devon, proved too strong for the local team and the Bombers lost in the final (19 points to 34).
The weekend’s competition was the culmination of a fantastic season for the youngsters. They came first in the Southern Division of the Junior League, being unbeaten throughout the season until Saturday’s loss in the final.
Head Coach Jill Anderson said of the team, “I’m so proud of their second place. The standard of play in the U19 league is high, particularly on Saturday when the best four teams in each division met for the finals and our team was up there with the best of them. They played their hearts out all season and this is great recognition for their efforts”
The team at the weekend consisted of: George Collins, Lauren Exell, Aiden Hughes, Jordan Hughes, James Newton, Jack Perry, Henry Teall and Alex Walls. The whole team are young enough to play next season in this league where they will work to gain first place!
The club’s senior team, which includes many of these juniors, is on course for promotion from the National League Division 3. After ten games, they are unbeaten, scoring 703 points and conceding only 239. Winning their last two games at the beginning of April will give them promotion next season!!
