The Bury Bombers, over the weekend of the 30/31st October, competed in the Stoke Mandeville Junior Championships. They were joined by 7 teams in the Under 15 competition. They were coached by Peter Rix, and assistant by Chris Rix and Lloyd Jones. Sadly Jill Anderson, head coach, couldn’t be there. The team, along with three players from the Hereward Heat team, represented the East of England.
The competition was split into two days, the first being pool matches, where all the teams played each other (the competition being split into 2 pools, of which East were in pool B). The team did not have a particularly good Saturday. In their 3 games, they lost them all. However, the experience the new players gained was invaluable, and the more established members of the team had time to get some match practice, as they had so little before the championships.
The Sunday was the playoffs, so after the quarter-finals, a semi-final, then final could be decided. The East team faced the mighty Irish team, who had won all their games in pool A, and therefore faced the last placed team in pool B. It may have been the breakfast, but the East team seemed re-energised from their disappointing Saturday. They played amazingly, with nearly every player having a shot, and many of them scoring. It was an extremely tight match, but East managed to come out on top, winning 8 - 6. This woke up the entire opposition, as they now saw East as a threat. This win got the East team into the Semi-finals, and their next match was against East Midlands, who had beat them the previous day. Nevertheless, this didn’t faze the East team, and with their new found confidence, they started the match full of optimism. Again this was an extremely tight match, but after the team got ahead in the dying minutes, they kept the lead, and won, but only by 8 - 7. This meant the team were into the final.
During the other matches, the mighty Yorkshire team, coached by Hugh Anderson, the Bury Bombers old coach (who was coaching Yorkshire as he moved up to Sheffield for University) had destroyed the opposition to get into the final, winning every match. In the final, the East team played amazingly, matching the Yorkshire team’s every move. When they scored, East scored. However, when Yorkshire put their strongest player on, they began to build a small lead. The East team continued to fight, and never gave up. However, the time ran out, and Yorkshire were victorious 25 - 15. Nevertheless, the fact the East team got into the final showed how well they did. The whole team played fantastically, and everyone involved with them, and Hugh, were extremely proud. When Jill was told of the result, she was overwhelmed with happiness, and was extremely proud. Well done to everyone, you were great!
